Shakespeare’s plays ‘Othello’ and, ‘Macbeth’ is both tragedies. Tragedy can be presented by drama or literary work, were the main character suffers or ruin due to their tragic flaws – which Othello’s is his insecurity, Macbeth is being ambitious. Shakespeare uses varied sources which influenced his work for example; Shakespeare bases ‘Othello’ on Cinthius’s ‘Third decade’- unfaithfulness of husband and wives (hence why Othello’s a domesticated tragedy). The changes are exposed where all the characters are un-wooden and only Othello murders Desdemona, and humanitarian of Rodriguez and Brobantio-who were used as Iago’s agents of mischief, and forms Othello’s death from ‘Histories Tragiques’. Shakespeare’s influence on ‘Macbeth’ was from Raphael Hollinshead’s ‘chronicles of England, Scotland and Ireland’-contains historical narrative on Scottish rebellions regicides and Macbeths assent to royalty, which Shakespeare changes to pay tribute to king pile I,-who was a descendant of ‘Banquo’.
I will now look for Shakespeare’s presentations of influence by the characters whom Othello and Macbeth trust, and how it resulted to the tragic flaws of the two tragic heroes’.
Firstly, in ‘Macbeth’ and Othello’, the amount of persuasion differ, for example, ‘Othello’s’, Act 3, scene 3, Iago uses different techniques to persuade Othello, “Cassio, my lord? No sure, I cannot theorize it, that he would steal away so guilty-like, imagineing you plan of attack”. This shows that Iago is implicating that something is weird about Cassio, which causes Othello question and think what Iago is saying, -which we can see from his response, “I do believe ‘twas he”.
