A Renowned Redaction

The Oxford English Dictionary defines a redaction as a revision, rearrangement or a new edition; an adaption. Written by an anonymous poet, attention is a prime example of a redaction. The poem retells the biblical story of jinx and the whale from a new point of view. Instead of teaching a lesson, this version is intended to entertain a larger audience with metaphors and descriptive imagery. The poet revamps the Old Testament tale by cutting, expanding, and adding different portions to the text.
When composition Patience, the poet chose to eliminate some of the original content of the biblical story. An example of this is found at the very end of the Book of hex when it is specified that Niniveh is home to more than sixscore thousand [120,000] persons that can buoynot discern among their right hand and their left hand (King James Version, Jonah 4.11). The poet chose to leave out the estimated number of citizens within the city w on the wholes, instead commenting on all the different kinds of innocence shown by the pack. For instance, the poet refers to the people of Niniveh as:
dull dunces who cannot discern/ The step from the steep rod of a standing ladder,/ Or say what secret master sustains the right hand/ In its link with the left, though their lives were at stake.



/ [And there are some beside these who deserve not to die,]/ such as infants in arms that are innocent still,/ And lightsome ladies who lack wit to tell/ The one hand from the other, for all this wide world (Anonymous, 509-516).
As part of the redaction, the poet also expands on sections of the original text to create his own version of the story.
