In King Lear good characters receive bad fortune throughout the play. Lear, Gloucester, Kent, and Edgar all have bad fortune. In the start-off of the play, Lear banishes his assistant Kent and exiles his little girl Cordeilia because she loves his father in quality not quantity,Unhappy that I am, I cannot heave My heart into my mouth. I love your majesty According to my bond, no more nor less. (I.i,90-93) This going by Cordelia makes Lear upset and exiles her.
Lear has just placed himself on the wheel of fortune by giving the land and kingdom to Goneril and Reagan who are the two evil sisters in the play. When Lear banishes Kent, he creates trouble for himself because Kent is the only person who is keeping Lear sane during the controversy between him and his daughter. When this happens, Lear moves down on the wheel of fortune. This puts Lear in a position on the wheel of fortune that will result in a significant downfall and will keep him down because in conclusion his daughters lock him out of his castle, take away his knights, and have him go insane, Lear eventually reaches the end of his life at the bottom of the wheel. His daughter Cordelias death eventually makes him die of a garbled heart, keeping him down on the wheel of fortune.
