Studying the Childrens Language in a Bilingual Community in East Java:
A discussion of methods

2010

Abstract1
This paper is based on a creation given in a UWA Linguistics Department seminar
in December 2008 and minor changes have been made after its coating during field
research in 2009-2010. In this paper, I explain the deduction and originality of my
study in terms of subject, setting, aspect, and instrument. The study focuses on childrens
lecture in a bilingual setting: ethnical spoken quarrel and national lyric in East Java. The
study is wide because the goals cover three major aspects, namely: childrens
language proficiency, language choice, and language views. Moreover, these three
aspects have been investigated in three different locations: a big city, a small town, and
a village. As children were the subjects of the study, the representation to elicit the data was
designed in an innovative fashion such that the childrens interest could be accommodated.

children feel they were not being the subjects of the study. A role play performance was
used as the guise, and twain types of questionnaires written in Javanese and Indonesian
were provided as the behaviour/attitude measurement.
