Internal Conflict in A Separate Peace by John Knowles

A Greek poet, Sophocles, states that, We result never reach a full realization of who we ar as individuals until we find some other human being with whom we tramp share ourselves. Through the course of the book, gene harbors feelings of wishfuly, admiration, and resentment toward Finny, especially Finnys attitude, and accomplishments. comp acents green-eyed monster and self loathing personality sparks an internal conflict that is mulish through ultimately, the death of Phineas.\nFinny incorporated characteristics and abilities Gene longed to lift up in himself. In the beginning of the novel, it rear be argued that Finnys acrobatic abilities and accomplishments was the root of resentment Gene felt. Although it was a factor, and was what Gene believed was the lineage of the negative feelings he felt toward Finny, as one progresses deeper in the book , it is evident Gene isnt really jealous of Finnys athletic cogency, he is jealous of the world Finny lives in. One make full with youth, sincerity and niceness. John Knowles makes their relationship, in the beginning, almost like one two brothers would share. There was impish competition and some green-eyed monster which was common to confab in brothers. The reader will see Genes arch jealousy turn into a dangerous game that results in death. It was hypnotism. I was beginning to see that Phineas could get away with whatsoeverthing. I couldnt help envying him that a curt, which was utterly normal. There was no pervert in envying even your best friend a little(25). At this point, Finny is romancing the principal to rescind trouble for wearing a pink shirt. Witnessing Finnys ability to talk himself out of any bad situation sparks jealousy within Gene. Gene seems to unloosen his obvious jealousy and tends to coppice it off like its nothing.
